Tutorial Light Clients - Computers without Hard Disk (HDD)

What is Thin Client?

A Thin Client or Thin Client (Thin Client) is a computer (client) with little processing capacity (CPU, RAM) without hard drive on an architecture client-server network, therefore depends primarily on the central server for tasks processing.

In designing a client-server application, there is a decision to be taken: what part of the application must be made by the customer and what the server.

Clients are generally used in conjunction with application servers who perform the functions of file access and data processing, customers limited interaction with the user.

Thus, the need for storage on clients is removed and the CPU and RAM requirements are reduced. This results in a lower cost of hardware and maintenance, since applications are installed on the server and not on each of the jobs. The latter greatly simplifies software update, backup (backup), virus detection, among others.

The benefits of this type of architecture reach the reduction of electricity consumption and noise levels.

Advantage:
  • Greater stability in conservation station configuration.
  • efficient protection against malicious programs.
  • Conservation of applications and programs.
  • centralized control of resources.
  • Centralized control of connectivity.
  • Decreased energy consumption.
 Economic benefits:
  • The expenses for HDD, LCD and FDC decrease significantly.
  • Lower cost of hardware.
  • Decrease in reports and technical services procedures applied and the response times.
  • Increased time of exploitation of technology.
  • Breakages networks are less frequent than in the parts replaced by application.
 Introduction.

Computerization of society and especially of teaching has placed a top place in this area. In the search for solutions to the major problems for society it represents keep running this priority program.

This technology is internationally known under the name of "Thin Client". mainly it offers the following features:

  • Implementation of a computer network environment in which the terminals do not use hard disk and can not use CD and Floppy Towers.
  • Using a Configuration feature-enhanced network server that shares its hard disk with terminals or workstations.
  • The basic processing is done on terminals or clients.

The choice of this technology increasingly underdeveloped countries, but all they want and need to make better use of its resources not only incorporated. A whole network of CL can be installed in minutes. But the really interesting thing is that all data, users and applications can be managed and configured from a central location, resources equally shared by network users being; still saving financial resources and technological and computing the main attractions of this solution reliability.

The following work is aimed at ensuring that stakeholders are able to install CL and solve problems that may arise in their laboratories.

A very important element of this technology is a software application that runs on the server and virtual HDD Customer, stored on the server, with the same functionality and similar to the local HDD performance.

The software used is BXP. Among its advantages is assigning an image to all customers with the same motherboard (motherboard) and assigning images in shared mode, which allows the contents of that virtual HDD can not be permanently changed by the user. The information to be stored permanently on hard disk must be introduced for remote access to each virtual disk.
This technology involves substantial improvement of the educational process teaching laboratories from the Bank reduced problems both for Educational Software, use and provisioning of hardware and implementation costs and maintenance. It also allows to generate a solution using desktops or existing technologies with a high degree of obsolescence.

List of software installed on the server.

1.      Microsoft Windows Server 2003, superior or user choice.
2.      BXP. (Full Server mode)
3.      Compressor WinRar.
4.      Reader PDF Acrobat Reader.
5. They      can be installed other software application or network management objectives maintenance of the server itself.
List of software installed on clients.

1.      Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
2.      BXP. (In client mode)

Some early work with the configuration thin client.

1.      When working on a client about a closed on the server when you restart the client image all changes made by the user disappear which guarantees the maintenance of client configuration.
2.      The images must remain closed on the server to prevent modified or corrupted.
3.      To modify an image must be open.
4.      When an image is changed on a client, the client other image sharing must be turned off to prevent the corrupt image.
5.      For each model PC you need to create an image on the server.
6.      All clients of the same model using the same image.
7.      When you are editing an image and several changes are made to the PC must be restarted every time a change is made so that they can be assimilated by the image correctly.
8. It      is essential to follow the verbatim work methodology in a laboratory with CLC.
9.      The servers must be protected by access passwords for Windows and SETUP.
10.   To open or close an image on the server clients of image must be turned off.
11.   If you are working on the server to remember: First off all clients, shut down the server, connect mouse, keyboard and monitor and then turn on the server again. Never connect or disconnect peripherals with the power on PC. Never turn on or turn off the server powered clients.
12.   The setup Customer must be password protected. The same for all clients of a server.
13.   Passwords should remain sealed envelope or sealed in the management of each center. It should be opened only in extreme and essential case by authorized personnel.
